Well all the usual, i was up buzzing on Saturday night tying pink until after midnight...I was looking forward to another session on the Severn with Woody, Roger Bryant and Englands 'mad for it' John Tyzack...
I had had a cracker the week before with the lads and was looking forward to them ladies again.
Its funny how fishing get you, on the eve of going on a session with the lads i am thinking about it all night, wondering what the day will bring, i thought it was only me who is like that until i spoke to Rodger who said he had been tying all week and could not sleep the night before... Wesser works on site with me and we talk all day about fly fishing with other trades looking at us as though we are insane, last week we were in the back garden of a huge mansion practising our casting seeing who could hit the brick!! The lady of the house brings us tea and coffee out and just laughs at us...Wess will often ring me and say he needs to stop tying late at night as he is dreaming of pink shrimps and duns all night!! I think we all know that that feeling...A good tip is to finish off your nights tying with a few minuites of Red Tube and this sorts me out..
Anyway i picked Woody up around half six and we made our way to a road side cafe to meet RB and JT..
JT looked very tired and had been guiding for 2 days with some drinking thrown in but he was right up for it as usual..
Ariving at the river we noticed there was a slight colour and it was on its way up but that would not put us all off so we tackled up and got fishing...
I looked over to Woody and we both could tell it was going to be a different story...
We walked for a good 20 mins to find some new spots, hopefully out of the usual park up and fish spots....
We hammered a section with JT fishing hard and it was obvious it was going to tough, we were fishing the usual runs on the edge of rifles and deeps holes but i just fancied the a long shallow gravel run which was flowing at a good pace..I used a slightly different method to get the line out as to fish this big run quicker and 'fish' all the run, czech nymphing is great but its alot slower to cover a huge pool..
I was getting towards the top of a pool and got that sinking feeling of jack shit but i kept going and it paid off big time..
Mid point of the drift my indicator was trunddeling away as my point fly bounced bottom and then it just zipped across stream as the fish sipped the fly in and shot back to its hold...A sharp hit downstream and i felt the fish move downstream, now that is a great feeling as most Grayling lads will know, when the bottom moves!! the next thing that goes through my head is keeping a good hook hold, that was sorted and then this fish went beserk and was proper giving me some stick and at times just holding bottom with me on full side strain....i did think it was a small fish at first until it saw me, the lads were giving me loads as i would them but i was not going to cave in and started to get the better of the fish... JT bollocking me for making a bit of a hash at times but thats what i want, i soon got my head on and slipped it into the net with a big sigh...JT came over and said ' that a proper one pal' Woody and Roger were buzzin but did not mess around and were soon working towards my hold!! We weighed it at 2lb 4oz and 46cm long... a new pb!!
I just timed it right to get back to my swim before Woody n Rogers lines were over, this i dont mind because its become abit of a joke with Woody and myself, we jump in eachother swims if one of us catches and its agood piss take when you pinch a few out.....
This time i got lucky, as there lines were around my head i managed to get a cast back in and took its partner at 1lb 12oz...swweeettt....
Both fish were caught on a Trugg size 4 Leather back bomb on the top dropper!!! with a beach ball as my indicator.......
From then on the fishing was shite with only 5 fish caught all day between all of us and most were fingerlings, fair play to all the lads, we fished to the death and to watch JT after three harcore days casting between fallen trees in places that have never seen fly was sweet and thats why he is the bollox, he is always on it....
The Dee had seen him take a 2lb 12oz fish the day before and its the clunk pictured so he was still buzzin....the manc ****!!!
We were approached by the baliff of the river who asked for our tickets, when reading JT's he said in his welsh acent 'well boyo we have someone famous on the river!' when he read mine and Woody's he said 'Well boyo we have a pair of prick's on the river' lol
Even though the fishing was hard, i got lucky and did a pb, but just being out with this great set of lads is sweet..The crack we have is top draw, on my last post you will see a picture of wesser in some shades at our fishing shop, we were trying them on and taking the piss out of each other, well we were walking up the river and i noticed Roger had put some the same ones on, i could not beleive he would buy these and he did look a right **** so he did have some real stick for that!! But i hear they are the new fashion on the street from Roger so i will be defo buying a pair...
Top day out fishing, Living the Dream, and yes the fish were caught on a JT pink sparkle shrimp on the top dropper....
Nice one
