Butter cup Yellow and the ladies wont leave me alone!!!

Been all around Derbyshire and Staffordshire rivers today to have a hour or two on each river and generally moving about..
The rain had changed river slightly in the night and got just what it needed, the rivers have been on there arse and good to look at but not the best for fishing so it was time to get out and a bit of colour would give me more stealth in my new approach to fly fishing, i am getting in very close to fish and keeping as much line off the water as possible, even while fishing the dry or nymphing is basically the same, i am using rod of 3# but 10ft and 9ft in length...this might seem odd for the smaller rivers but i am after better control and presentation, seeing the methods in czeching has opened my eyes on drag ect and time will see how i go on but today hit me bags of fish but most the oos Grayling...
From entering the Dove i could see that it was milking up slightly and from general fishing on rivers i know that if you catch it on its way up there is a short spell in 4hrs or so where you can get superb action, i think the fish sence what going on and start to hit the food before they have to take cover on a river high and coloured.....
This is what happened and my first cast into a likely looking pool produced a OOS Grayling arround a pound...I then moved around areas hitting fish after fish who were willing to hit the JT straggle nymph, the only downside being Grayling, yes its out of season now but the fish dont quite know it yet and are feeding heavy, the Trout on the other hand are not quite switched on and have not moved the Grayling out of the way and seem  to be holding in back eddies tight to the banks out of the flow, another few weeks will see both species swap positions. Its very hard to change your fishing spots as all the likely ones still hold Grayling...
I did manage to catch 5 trout, one beautfiul fish in its buttercup yellow, all were taken on a nymph as with heaavy rain there was never going to be a rise...i had too many Grayling really and one was huge but i did not weigh it as it just not feel right now they are OOS, i did not dare guess the weight!!!
I did see quite a few hatches of LDO coming off but nothing to get the fish turned on...
A great day out in heavy rain, nothing on the dry yet but i am ready and waiting!!!

Nice one

A Dovedale half day guiding with JT produces a 2lb 12oz clunk!!

I have had a great season on the Grayling this year and caught some huge fish i could only dream of, fishing the bugs has been something that has got hold of me and will look forward to next season, being guided by JT from knowing nothing about Grayling fishing was the best thing i did, i picked up no bad habbits and i learnt to fish John's way which after a hard 6 weeks or so it clicked, i had a few problems that i wanted to iron out so called on Tyzack to give me a half day session at Dovedale.
We met around eleven at Dovadale and had the usual good crack and tackled up, i said to JT it looked like it was going to be very hard with the river being so low and clear and he just gave me that look and said 'the fish are still hear brother and we will have em' well that gave me a confident booster and we set off nymphed up...
JT's new fly for this time of year is the 'straggle nymph' that was thrown at me and told to put on the middle dropper, dont know who picked the name of this fly but it sounds like something i have been watching on red tube!!
John said that in conditions like this its pretty obvious where the fish were going to be and the added bonus was that there would be lots in there, how true this was when i took 5 half pound Grayling on the 'Straggle' out of a small pool, and a few trout to the point fly
We were taking fish out of lots of swims but they seemed to be in quick paced flow with a deep scour,
I took one fish pushing over the pound mark and then lost the one paired up with which looked a good fish...
Then it was the 'champs' show as i stood being intructed of a hot method and watched his line stop dead, he lifted into this fish and it rolled backwards and took a run dowstream, we knew she was a clunk but when the fish held in the flow with a 4inch dorsel we knew it was a bit special, JT's fish playing is soooo cool its untrue, never once did this fish ever look to have him over, it would not be bullied and John let it do what it wanted but with pure control, a joy to watch in a very tight space...
We slipped the net under and John's manc accent shouted 'its a clunk ar kid' weighed at a wacking 2lb12oz she was pictured and slipped back with some underwater camera action, i am waiting for JT to post it across to me as it is wicked!!
Well we were buzzin now, the biggest i have seen come from the Dove this year and we know theres bigger but they will have to wait until next season...
I must thank John for guiding me into a Grayling man this year, sounds a bit like i want to shag him but he is one top guide and makes you catch fish in any condition's, he is not there to lord it, never gives it the big un, and most of all he a right sound bloke who once you have been out with him for guiding he always helps you out with any free advice on the phone and stuff....if you want to sort your fishing, even if your already a top fly man, JT will get you 'on em'

Going for a river walk with Jan next week on the famous Derbyshire Wye, now that will get me buzzing!!!
Nice one

Blanking on the Severn!!

Got the chance for a days fishing and could not decide where i could go, i spoke to Woody Saturday and we both agreed that fishing would be hard either whereever i decided to go, i decided to go upto the higher end of the river Severn as i love the run out and its a lovely place to fish for Grayling plus the added bonus of a chance of a huge fish...
I was going solo and set off around 8 oclock, there had been a frost in the night and the skys were clear, yes it was going to be hard but its just great to be out fishing..
I loved the drive out and even called Mcdonalds for my usual lat'te, Woody does give me stick when i ask for these as my Stoke accent does not go well when asking for this 'posh' coffee!!
I arrived  to see a cristal clear river, it looked amazing as i could see everything and huge shoals of Ladies ghosting around..
I soon set up and after a few casts i could see these fish were totally switched off, after years of fishing i can spot this a mile off...from then on i had a wander upstream to try and find some rifles as to give me some stealth and hopefully find the odd fish willing to have a go....
The river was totally on it arse, a powerful river like this looked very much in need of a good wash out...
I knew i was going to struggle to get a fish and most of the time i would fish very hard to try and get one but today i thought 'fuck it' i was just going to enjoy the senery and the watch the Red Kites riding the thermals...
I did wait for a few hours to see if a hatch of LDO would come off and liven things up but it was not to be, i never saw one olive..
I did have a go on the dry which got me going when i had a Grayling move from its hold, follow the fly and turn away as it realized it was a hook and feather! The dry really does get me going and its not long now until i will be dry fly mad again, for me Grayling fishing has been superb and the czech nymph method is a joy to use, but for trout its got to be dry, that it....
I think i might get one more Grayling session in next week and then its time for me to start hitting that Wye where i must admit that 'dreams are made'....
So Dave (Squire) i have had a blank but they are 'good for the soul brother' i remember carp fishing in winter and going 23 times without a fish and broke the lake record on the 24th session!!!LTD
Nice one
Spot the Shoul of Ladies, there are twenty two fish shown if you count them!!

Guesting on a unfished Derbyshire river bags me a 2lb brace!!!

Had a quick hour today and guested a part of a river totally unfished in Derbyshire, i had to pull the right strings to get a session and my God was it worth it!!
I had seen this river for years and it had all the looks of a proper trout run, i cannot mention the river at the moment, now this is not my style but i would not be able to fish it again...
The run is a 100metres rifle tailing off with a single scum lane slowing off at the end, i rigged up a 3 nymph set up and slid into the river at the bottom end, the run had a shallow slow run one side and on one side of the river it had a deep long glide that shallowed up slowly right to the top of the stretch..It looked as good as any i had fished and my heart was pounding knowing what this river might hold...
I started fishing the back end of the rifle, the river bed was sweet and i could trickle my point fly over the flat smooth stones with no snags, i just knew that i would find the Ladies as i moved further up the run, i love fishing new water but with this being unfished it had a extra buzz and i was mad for it....
I soon got the short sharp stop in the line and hooked into a fish, a run downstream revealed a Female Grayling which come to hand and weighed bang on 2lb, now i have been lucky to catch 6 Grayling over the two pound mark this year but this one was in a condition i have never seen, it was absolutley perfect in ever way a grayling should be...I let her drift off and then went looking for partner and after 2 casts i hit into another fish, after a good scrap i landed the male weighing in at 2lb 3oz!!!
Well i was now buzzing, i had only been in the river for half hour and had taken a cracking brace, but what happened next proper did my head in.....
I moved up the pool and my JT indicator stuck dead, i struck hard to feel a snag on the bottom, but then the drag started to click slowly take line off downstream, i was in no major flow and this fish was just hugging bottom and pulling line off the reel, i knew this was a very big fish from the plodding, i thought trout at first but the fight was controlled and slow,my ten foot streamflex was hooped all the way over!! the fish had taken my JT flashback point fly as i saw the other two droppers come towards me as i got some control, i guided the fish out of the flow and this is where it all went wrong, the fish came upto the surface, rolled over and the hook pinged!!! the fish was as long as my arm and i just stood there froze realizing what i had just lost, i had just lost a fish that i would not even dare guess the weight but thats fishing and i will get my chance again...
The best hours fishing to date....
Nice one

The Severn continued write up......

Well all the usual, i was up buzzing on Saturday night tying pink until after midnight...I was looking forward to another session on the Severn with Woody, Roger Bryant and Englands 'mad for it' John Tyzack...
I had had a cracker the week before with the lads and was looking forward to them ladies again.
Its  funny how fishing get you, on the eve of going on a session with the lads i am thinking about it all night, wondering what the day will bring, i thought it was only me who is like that until i spoke to Rodger who said he had been tying all week and could not sleep the night before... Wesser works on site with me and we talk all day about fly fishing with other trades looking at us as though we are insane, last week we were in the back garden of a huge mansion practising our casting seeing who could hit the brick!! The lady of the house brings us tea and coffee out and just laughs at us...Wess will often ring me and say he needs to stop tying late at night as he is dreaming of pink shrimps and duns all night!! I think we all know that that feeling...A good tip is to finish off your nights tying with a few minuites of Red Tube and  this sorts me out..
Anyway i picked Woody up around half six and we made our way to a road side cafe to meet RB and JT..
JT looked very tired and had been guiding for 2 days with some drinking thrown in but he was right up for it as usual..
Ariving at the river we noticed there was a slight colour and it was on its way up but that would not put us all off so we tackled up and got fishing...
I looked over to Woody and we both could tell it was going to be a different story...
We walked for a good 20 mins to find some new spots, hopefully out of the usual park up and fish spots....
We hammered a section with JT fishing hard and it was obvious it was going to tough, we were fishing the usual runs on the edge of rifles and deeps holes but i just fancied the a long shallow gravel run which was flowing at a good pace..I used a slightly different method to get the line out as to fish this big run quicker and 'fish' all the run, czech nymphing is great but its alot slower to cover a huge pool..
I was getting towards the top of a pool and got that sinking feeling of jack shit but i kept going and it paid off big time..
Mid point of the drift my indicator was trunddeling away as my point fly bounced bottom and then it just zipped across stream as the fish sipped the fly in and shot back to its hold...A sharp hit downstream and i felt the fish move downstream, now that is a great feeling as most Grayling lads will know, when the bottom moves!! the next thing that goes through my head is keeping a good hook hold, that was sorted and then this fish went beserk and was proper giving me some stick and at times just holding bottom with me on full side strain....i did think it was a small fish at first until it saw me, the lads were giving me loads as i would them but i was not going to cave in and started to get the better of the fish... JT bollocking me for making a bit of a hash at times but thats what i want, i soon got my head on and slipped it into the net with a big sigh...JT came over and said ' that a proper one pal'  Woody and Roger were buzzin but did not mess around and were soon working towards my hold!! We weighed it at 2lb 4oz and 46cm long... a new pb!!
I just timed it right to get back to my swim before Woody n Rogers lines were over, this i dont mind because its become abit of a joke with Woody and myself, we jump in eachother swims if one of us catches and its agood piss take when you pinch a few out.....
This time i got lucky, as there lines were around my head i managed to get a cast back in and took its partner at 1lb 12oz...swweeettt....
Both fish were caught on a Trugg size 4 Leather back bomb on the top dropper!!! with a beach ball as my indicator.......
From then on the fishing was shite with only 5 fish caught all day between all of us and most were fingerlings, fair play to all the lads, we fished to the death and to watch JT after three harcore days casting between fallen trees in places that have never seen fly was sweet and thats why he is the bollox, he is always on it....
The Dee had seen him take a 2lb 12oz fish the day before and its the clunk pictured so he was still buzzin....the manc ****!!!
We were approached by the baliff of the river who asked for our tickets, when reading JT's he said in his welsh acent 'well boyo we have someone famous on the river!' when he read mine and Woody's he said 'Well boyo we have a pair of prick's on the river' lol
Even though the fishing was hard, i got lucky and did a pb, but just being out with this great set of lads is sweet..The crack we have is top draw, on my last post you will see a picture of wesser in some shades at our fishing shop, we were trying them on and taking the piss out of each other, well we were walking up the river and i noticed Roger had put some the same ones on, i could not beleive he would buy these and he did look a right **** so he did have some real stick for that!! But i hear they are the new fashion on the street from Roger so i will be defo buying a pair...
Top day out fishing, Living the Dream, and yes the fish were caught on a JT pink sparkle shrimp on the top dropper....
Nice one
Glen
